Summary

This walking holiday follows scenic winding trails crisscrossing Dolomites' amazing valleys, hamlets and fairy tale villages. With the air crisp and fresh, you'll explore off the beaten tourist paths dotted with sun drenched scattered trees and alpine scenery. Throughout your offbeat treks, the lesser-known Dolomites shows off its greatness uneclipsed by its unique pale color discovered around 18th-century. The UNESCO-listed mountain range consists of 18 peaks covering roughly 350,000 acres of pure beauty. This relaxing walking tour takes on the most scenic hiking trails of the region. You'll begin each walk with a cable car ride giving you unbeatable views of towering limestone pinnacles, spires, evergreen forests, and rolling meadows. After arriving in Bolzano, the beautiful capital of South Tyrol, you'll be taken to a spectacular valley considered as one of the most breathtaking in the 'Ladino' heartland of the Dolomites. This spectacular valley will be your base throughout your holiday.

The walks during your tour follow well-marked trails with no dramatic climbs or descents. During your hike there will be lots of opportunity to explore an assortment of rare flora and fauna, the Dolomites' main claim to fame, and delight in a country style lunch or break or in a vintage mountain hut that truly adds up to your mountain experience in the Italian Alps.

This tour departs daily from April to October.

ITINERARY

Day 1, Bolzano
You will be picked up in Bolzano and taken north, following the Adige Valley towards Austria, before turning left into one of the most beautiful valleys in the Dolomites , a fascinating one-hour drive away. (D)

Day 2, Dolomites
Your first walk is a spectacular introduction to the Dolomites. To get to the start, you will be driven to the western end of the valley.  From here you take a cable car to the top of the northern side (to 2,500 metres) from where you have breathtaking views over the whole range, stretching to the horizon on all sides, from Austria in the north to Veneto in the south.  From here you take an undulating, well-marked path across alpine pastures, through pine forests and back down to your village, with the option of stopping for lunch in a mountain hut along the way (4 hours). (B,D)

Day 3, Dolomites
This morning is an easy day, following a gentle river-side path that takes you the length of the valley past farmhouses and through villages to the largest town in the valley (1.5 hours).  You’ll have time to visit the town with its shops, markets and museums and also have lunch.  In the afternoon, you will have the option of walking back your base along the same trail or taking one of the regular local buses back to your base. (B,D)

Day 4, Dolomites
The walk today starts with a transfer back to the eastern end of the valley and another cable car ride, this time up the southern side of the valley (to 2,000 metres) from where you walk across the largest high altitude alpine meadows in Europe, a vast undulating amphitheatre of green fields surrounded by some of the most spectacular ranges in the area.  The walk passes a small hamlet where you can have lunch before continuing under the cliffs and then dropping back down through forest into the valley to your base (4 hours). (B,D)

Day 5, Dolomites
As the grand finale to your visit, you do a circuit walk around one of the most famous formations in the Dolomites.  To get to the start, you take a cable car directly up from the town (to 2280 mts).  From here, you follow a trail that contours around this extraordinary massif, with 800 metre cliffs soaring up above you (the highest peaks are over 3,000 metres).  There are regular mountain huts along the way, where you can have refreshments and/or lunch.  The trail brings you back to the cable car, which you take back to town (6 hours).  Although well-used and well-marked, parts of the trail are rough and ‘exposed’, not suitable for suffers of vertigo – we have include a less challenging alternative that also leaves from the town, exploring a neighbouring valley (2.5 hours). (B,D)

Day 6, Bolzano
You’ll be transferred back to Bolzano, which has regular national and international rail connections. (B)
