Summary

Fall in love with southern Italy during this exciting, 12-day escorted tour. During this trip, tour the ancient ruins of Pompeii, admire the stunning mosaic at the Monreale Cathedral, explore the sprawling Greek architecture of Valley of the Temples and experience Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. Start your journey in Rome where you will stay overnight. Board the bus and travel to the southern region of Italy. Make a short stop in Vomero hill and enjoy the views of the Gulf of Naples, Capri and Ischia. Then, head to the ancient Roman city of Pompeii and visit its archaeological sites. Continue to the beautiful town of Sorrento. You have a free day to explore the town or its surrounding areas. Ferries and hydrofoils connect the town to Amalfi, Positano, Capri and Ischia. Next, board the ferry to Palermo, Sicily’s capital. From Palermo, a town known for its Norman-Byzantine cathedral. Then, continue to the historic city of Segesta where you will visit the Doric Temple. Then, make way to Selinunte and Agrigento, home to the Valley of the Temples, one of the largest and well-preserved Greek buildings outside Greece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From Agrigento, depart for Piazza Armerina, home to Villa Romana del Casale, a Roman villa featuring the largest collection of Roman mosaics in the world. You will also visit the towns of Catania, Taormina, Syracaus, Messina, Noto and Celafu before you head back to Palermo.

Itinerary

Day 1, Rome
Benvenuti a Roma! After your arrival at the airport, make your own way to your hotel and then enjoy your first day in the city at your own leisure. Overnight stay.

Day 2, Rome – Naples – Pompeii – Sorrento
After breakfast, pick up at your hotel at 7:00 am approximately. Departure by coach heading south crossing the regions of Lazio and Campania. Arrival in Naples and short panoramic tour climbing up to Vomero hill to enjoy beautiful views over the Gulf of Naples with the Vesuvius, Capri, Ischia and Procida and the city below; time to take some nice pictures. Descending towards the port of Mergellina, you will leave the city and travel south toward Mount Vesuvius, and, once you reach the town of Pompeii, you will have lunch with the real Neapolitan pizza!

After lunch, you will enter in one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ruins of Pompeii, with Skip the Line entrance and a guided tour. traveling back in time to the tragic days in 79 A.D. when the silent Mount Vesuvius suddenly erupted, covering the prosperous Roman city in deadly volcanic ashes and poisonous gases, leaving this prosperous city crystallized until our days. You'll learn how people lived at that time, visiting houses and “bars” of the time, admiring frescoes and mosaics to imagine how rich and prosperous was the city before the dreadful day.

After the visit, you will drive along the Sorrentine Coast, arriving in Sorrento for dinner (dress code: jacket for men) and an overnight in your new hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 3, Sorrento
Breakfast at the hotel and free time to discover Sorrento. Dinner at the hotel. (Dress code: jacket for men) and overnight stay. (B, D)

Day 4, Sorrento – Palermo (overnight on ferry boat)
Breakfast at your hotel. Enjoy the morning at leisure. In the afternoon, depart to the port of Naples, where you will board on the Tirrenia/Snav regular ferry to Palermo. Overnight in cabin (dinner and breakfast available on board at an extra). (B)

Day 5, Palermo
Arrival early in the morning in port of Palermo and transfer to your hotel. Meet your group at the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay. (D)

Day 6, Palermo – Monreale – Palermo
Buffet breakfast at your hotel. In the morning, departure to Monreale. Enjoy the visit of the Cathedral famous for its mosaics as well as the Benedictine Cloister and the Palatine Chapel. Lunch at hotel. Afternoon at leisure. Dinner. (B, L, D)

Day 7, Palermo – Segesta – Trapani – Agrigento
Buffet breakfast at your hotel. Departure to Segesta to visit the Doric Temple surrounded by a splendid landscape. Then, the trip continues with a panoramic view of Trapani Saltworks on the way to Selinunte where you will enjoy a special lunch at a local farmhouse including an olive oil tasting.

After lunch, departure to Agrigento. Visit of the Valley of the Temples to admire the best-preserved temples in the whole Magna Grecia. Dinner. Overnight at hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 8, Agrigento – Piazza Armerina – Catania
Buffet breakfast at your hotel and departure to Piazza Armerina. Visit the Villa Romana del Casale with its splendid Roman mosaics. Lunch in a traditional restaurant.

Afternoon departure to Catania. Stop in a bar in the city centre to taste typical pastries of the region and, then, to do a panoramic walking tour of the city, the most important of the eastern coast particularly interesting for its buildings made of volcanic stone from the Etna. Dinner. Overnight stay at the hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 9, Catania – Etna – Taormina - Catania
Buffet breakfast at hotel and, weather permitting, excursion to Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe (3345 m). The bus will bring you up to the “Rifugio Sapienza” at 1800 m. Visit of the extinguished Craters of Mounts Silvestri. Wonderful variety of fauna and flora and moony landscapes can be seen on the way. The special ambient created during the centuries under nature, culture and history is inimitable all over the world. Then, proceed to a farmhouse where you will taste the most special Sicilian dishes. The tour continues to Taormina, an elegant and romantic town overlooking the Mediterranean. Enjoy some free time to continue your own discovery at leisure before you head back to Catania. (B, L, D)

Day 10, Catania – Siracusa – Noto – Catania
Buffet breakfast at your hotel. Departure to Syracuse and then enjoy a guided tour of this venerable city highlights of the Archaeological Area, the Greek Theatre, Latomia del Paradiso and the Cave of Dyonisius’ Ear. Lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, the tour heads to Noto to admire the Cathedral before returning to Catania. (B, L, D)

Day 11, Catania – Messina – Cefalù – Palermo
Buffet breakfast at the hotel and departure to Messina for a panoramic visit of the city including some beautiful views on the Strait that separates Sicily from the mainland. The journey continues to Cefalù. Lunch at a local restaurant. Cefalù is a splendid fishermen’s village and seaside resort. Visit the huge Norman Cathedral, founded in 1131 by Roger II and the Medieval Lavatory. Enjoy some time at leisure to stroll through the narrow lanes of the historic centre before you continue to Palermo. Dinner. Overnight at hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 12, Departure
Breakfast at the hotel. End of services. (B)
