Summary

Explore the real Sicily through its ancient Greek and Roman ruins, magnificent architecture, medieval villages and sumptuous cuisine during this exciting, 8-day escorted tour. Visit the historic cities and towns including Palermo, Cefualu, Catania, Siracusa, Noto, Taormina, Erice, Piazza Armerina, Agrigento, Selinunte and Monreale. You also have an option to visit Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe.

This tour is available from March to October every Saturday.

Itinerary

Day 1, Palermo
Arrive and make your own way to the hotel. Welcome cocktail and dinner. (D)

Day 2, Palermo – Cefalu – Catania
After a buffet breakfast, visit of the capital of Sicily, Palermo, one of the richest towns in the island for history and art: the Cathedral (during the Holy Mass, exterior visit only), the Palace of the Normans and its superb “Palatina" Chapel, the "Quattro Canti", the fountain of “Piazza Pretoria”, the Church of Santa Caterina and its Cloister. Lunch in a local restaurant. Depart to Cefalù, charming coastal town, a former fishing village which is also home to a breathtaking Norman Cathedral, famous for its mosaic of Christ Pantocractor, a stunning Byzantine mosaic that’s considered as one of the most important pieces of religious artwork in Sicily. Take a stroll to the city centre and down main street to reach the Cathedral and the medieval wash-house built in the rock. Proceed to Catania. (B, D)

Day 3, Catania – Syracuse – Noto – Catania
Depart to Siracusa, the most beautiful Greek colony of Sicily. Visit the archaeological park and the island of Ortigia. In the afternoon, proceed to Noto, renowned for its Baroque style. (B, D)

Day 4, Catania – Mount Etna – Taormina
After a buffet breakfast, weather conditions permitting, excursion to Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. Across fascinating landscape, we will reach a height of 1900 metres to visit the Sylvester Craters where you can enjoy a spectacular panorama over the Ionian Sea. On the way stop to the village of Zafferana Etnea, "the City of Honey" to visit a beautiful place where they produce honey and taste the precious nectar made by skilled hands. Continue to Taormina, charming city called "the pearl of the Ionian Sea", founded in 400 BC and beautifully located overlooking the sea and the peak of Mount Etna. Lunch in a local restaurant. Enjoy time at leisure to shop for handmade lace, coral jewels, ceramics, home-made sweets and preserves down “Corso Umberto” or simply walk through its tiny streets. (B, L, D)

Day 5, Catania – Piazza Armerina
Proceed to Piazza Armerina to visit the Villa Romana del Casale boasting the most complex collection of late Roman mosaics in the world. Continue to Agrigento, for a guided tour of the magnificent Valley of Temples. (B, L, D)

Day 6, Agrigento – Selinunte – Erice – Palermo
Visit the Archaeological Park of Selinunte, the largest in the Mediterranean area with the impressive Temples and Acropolis. Stop in a local farmhouse famous for olive oil tasting and lunch. Continue to the medieval town of Erice and walk through its winding lanes, inner courtyards and cobbled streets. Proceed to Palermo. (B, L, D)

Day 7, Palermo – Monreale – Palermo
Depart for Monreale to admire the cathedral with its mosaics. Continue with a panoramic tour of Palermo, one of the richest towns on the island for history and art. This afternoon is at leisure or take an optional excursion (extra cost) to Monte Pellegrino, the most famous mountain in Palermo, and explore Palermo’s most colourful market. (B, L, D)

Day 8, Departure
Tour ends after breakfast. (B)
